GoldenEye 007 takes you on a romp through Pierce Brosnan's first adventure as the legendary British secret agent, James Bond. All the way through the game is a high-octane ride following the plot of the movie. All the characters are present (including Robbie Coltrane's gangster and Alan Cumming's computer nerd, and yes, the Bond girls are there, you didn't think Rare would leave them out did you?), as well as a myriad of gadgets. Sadly the BMW Z3 did not make it, but the Tank did-rather a nice trade-off, wouldn't you say?
The game's missions have a unique objective-based approach. For example, you might have to rescue some hostages during the mission. As you pump up the difficulty, you get more objectives-you rescue the hostages AND defuse a bomb (all in a day's work). The game makes you rely on stealth too-using the under-powered, but silenced pistol won't bring guards running to you like the big machine gun will.
What about Bond fans? Needless to say, there are enough Bond elements in here to make hard-core James Bond fans scream with joy. The music is made up of remixes to the old Bond theme, which should get most people humming along (if you do that sort of thing). Glancing at the inventory screen, you see Bond's famous Walther PPK and a little 007 Camera from the movie Moonraker (unfortunately, the dry Martini-shaken, not stirred-is not included). You even get briefed by M, Q and (humorously) Moneypenny before you start your mission! However, what really made this reviewer go mad with excitement was the intro screen. (and that is a sight ot see - Ed) Switch on the N64, and you're treated to the gun-barrel intro (where 007 walks across the screen, turns and shoots) that marks the beginning of every Bond movie. Very, very cool.
One can't go without mentioning the fantastic multiplayer mode. Unlike PC shooters, where ambush seems to be the name of the game, GoldenEye concentrates on fast, frantic fun. Everyone can see each other's screen, and radar is provided for additional assistance, so hiding is a virtual impossibility. There are tons of different modes and weapon configurations. And the fact that you have all your buddies sitting next to you while you play does have the advantage of you hearing them scream in terror as you gun them down!
Fantastic graphics, fantastic sound, and an insanely great multiplayer mode. GoldenEye 007 is a very worthy purchase. Highly recommended.
